To say that Oregon has benefited from i...Patrick,
To say that Oregon has benefited from in-migration of highly educated Oregonians is to point to a problem with the logic in the current debate about M66/67. Many Oregonians are concerned about creating jobs (and thus want to keep taxes low) because they think those jobs will be for them, not for the in-migrants with superior education. To be more competitive for those jobs in the future, improving the quality of our education system is key -- as you pointed out in your Oregonian commentary.Bill Jaegerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08921671922642268189noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3471471289744825428.post-720105821461546612010-01-14T15:40:00.173-08:002010-01-14T15:40:00.173-08:00Eric,

I woudl be more interested in data that tell us how much their learnign was impacted.

But I am not really worries about older students as younger and disadvantaged students for whom these disruptions appear to have a significant affect on.

Doug,

This is a good and interesting point and I think it is probably correct to say that Oregon has benefited from the in-migration of highly educated individuals.Patrick Emersonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17242234148546323374noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3471471289744825428.post-35989920372886712352010-01-14T13:55:40.009-08:002010-01-14T13:55:40.009-08:00While education is important, data from the U.S. D...While education is important, data from the U.S. Department of Education shows that temporary spending cuts have no noticeable impact on high school graduation rates.Eric Fruitshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01472420514448445338noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3471471289744825428.post-16904118015895339672010-01-13T09:22:52.725-08:002010-01-13T09:22:52.725-08:00Guesstimates is by far the best word to have come ...Guesstimates is by far the best word to have come out of the 20th Century.Mhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16930244720033378546noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3471471289744825428.post-16785714921764173742010-01-13T06:49:20.344-08:002010-01-13T06:49:20.344-08:00I grant that education is important to the nationa...I grant that education is important to the national economy. But is local education important to the local economy? Because of labor mobility, maybe sub-national governments do not feel a strong incentive to invest in education. Should this be a federal matter?Doug Gabbardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08004276724238866340noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3471471289744825428.post-59727408416863714602010-01-12T10:48:29.540-08:002010-01-12T10:48:29.540-08:00Sorry, I meant measure 5. I've never understood why anything other than oversight costs are a burden of the state government.Ralphhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15935553689879498648noreply@blogger.com
